(Greek mythology theme challenge)
Athena was the great Olympian goddess of wise counsel, war, the defence of towns, heroic endeavour, weaving, pottery and other crafts. She was depicted crowned with a crested helm, armed with shield and spear, and wearing the snake-trimmed aigis cloak wrapped around her breast and arm, adorned with the monstrous head of the Gorgon.
 
Myths associated with the goddess include:
-Her birth from the head of Zeus, fully-grown and arrayed in arm
-The Judgement of Paris in which she competed with Hera and Aphrodite for the prize of the golden apple
-The weaving contest with Arakhne who was transformed by the goddess into a spider
-The assisting of Perseus in his quest to slay the Gorgon and the Argonauts in their quest for the Golden Fleece

Dionysus was the great Olympian god of wine, vegetation, pleasure and festivity. He was depicted as either an older bearded god or a pretty effeminate, long-haired youth. His attributes included the thyrsos (a pine-cone tipped staff), drinking cup, leopard and fruiting vine. He was usually accompanied by a troop of Satyrs and Mainades (female devotees or nymphs).
 
Myths associated with the god include:
-Hera inflicting madness upon him and he wandering over Aigyptos (Egypt) and Syria. The Aigyptian king Proteus first welcomed him
-His marriage to Ariande, daughter of King Minos of Krete
-Travelling Asia and India to teach viticulture and wine making.
 
Dionysus is the productive, overflowing and intoxicating power of nature, which carries man away from his usual quiet and sober mode of living. Wine is the most natural and appropriate symbol of that power, and it is therefore called "the fruit of Dionysus."

As the daughter of Cronus and Rhea, Demeter was known as the mother or giver of food and barely. She was responsible for the fertility of the Earth. With her brother Zeus, she gave birth to Persephone whose abduction by Hades is probably the most well known myth she is associated with. Demeter was depicted as a mature woman crowned, holding a sheaf of wheat and a torch.
 
Myths associated with the goddess include:
-The abduction of her daughter Persephone by Hades and Demeter's subsequent famine of the earth
-The journeys of Triptolemos, a hero sent by the goddess to instruct mankind in agriculture
-The punishment of Erysikhthon who was cursed with an unquenchable hunger by the goddess for cutting down her holy grove.
-The nursing of Demophoon, the young son of King Keleus of Eleusis

Artemis was the great Olympian goddess of hunting, wilderness and wild animals. She was also a goddess of childbirth, and the protectress of the girl child up to the age of marriage. Her twin brother Apollo on the other hand was the protector of the boy child. Both gods also brought about sudden death and disease. Her attributes are the bow, quiver, and arrows, or a spear, stags, and dogs. She was depicted as either a huntress or goddess of the moon, or with her twin brother Apollo.
 
Myths associated with the goddess:
-The trojan war were she was beaten by the angry Hera in a contest of the gods
-Turning the hunter Aktaion into a stag after he saw her bathing
-Her birth by Leto, followed by Apollo's birth
-Her chastity as a maiden goddess
-The Kalydonian boar sent by Artemis to ravage Kaldyon
-The giant Orion, a close companion of the goddess, who was slain by the goddess or her jealous brother

Hephaestus was the great Olympian god of fire, metalworking, stonemasonry and the art of sculpture. Generally depicted as a lame man holding a hammer, tongs (tools of a smith) and riding a donkey.
 
Myths associated with the god include:
-His fall from Olympus after rejection from Hera
-Subsequent trapping of Hera in a cursed throne and return to Olympus
-His marriage to Aphrodite and her constant infidelity, especially with the god Ares.
-The trojan war in which he fought the river god Skamandros with fire

So I've gotten this sudden fascination with space and all space related things. Funny since im not a science-ish person. But lol I guess after I saw awesome pics of the universe and northern lights im hooked. Off to do some research XD
